By fourteen, she was legally emancipated by the California courts because child labor laws prevent child actors from working more than 5 hours on school nights and require them to have a guardian. She wanted to pursue her acting career full time and being legally declared an adult was the only way that she could. At fifteen, she dropped out of high school, but with the help of a tutor passed her equivalency exam.

She was bon on June 21st, 1973 in Los Angeles to actor Geoffrey Lewis and graphic designer Glenis Batley. She has 11 siblings and half-siblings from her mothers three marriages and her fathers four. Her career started in 1987 with the TV series "I Married Dora" and the Showtime mini-series "Home Fires."

She made her film debut in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" playing Chevy Chase's daughter.
